About DRN Surgical Assistant Certification

The ABSA is an internationally recognized credentialing organization and member of the Institute for Credentialling Excellence.

Upon successful passage of the certification examination and verification of your credentials and eligibility by the ABSA, you receive certification as a Surgical Assistant, with the right to use the "SA-C" designation.

About The Examination

The ABSA Certification Examination for Surgical Assistants consists of three (3) sections:

  • General Knowledge Section:   150 Multiple-Choice Questions
    This section covers all areas of perioperative medicine and all surgical disciplines.
  • Specialty Section:   20 Multiple-Choice Questions
    This section evaluates advanced knowledge along with surgical instrumentation identification and usage.
  • Practical Section:   Practical Skills Assessment
    This section evaluates manual skills and other practical knowledge.

 
The breakdown of subject areas tested is approximately:
Anatomy and Medical Terminology:   15%
General Operative Knowledge:   20%
General Surgery:   25%
Orthopedic Surgery:   15%
Gynecological Surgery:   15%
Various Other Surgical Specialties:   10%

 
The examination takes approximate 2 ½ hours to complete.

 
Passing Score:
In order to pass the examination, examinees must achieve the following minimum scores by section:
General Knowledge Section:   70%
Specialty Section:   75%
Practical Section:   75%

Eligibility Requirements

Physicians (Both US- and Internationally-Trained (IMGs)) and Dentists:

  • Must be a graduate of a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools
  • Be a graduate of a surgical residency or other advanced training program AND have at-least 2 years of primary or advanced sugical experience
    (or)
    Be able to provide documentation of having worked as a first assistant for at-least 2 years AND have assisted on at-least 400 clinical cases or have logged at-least 1500 surgical hours during the last two years
    (or)
    Be a graduate of a formal surgical assistant training program approved by the ABSA AND have at-least two years of clinical surgical work experience
     

  • Have a diploma, degree, or academic certificate from an accredited school, college, or university whose documented primary language of instruction is English
    (or)
    TOEFL iBT score of at-least 79 (or the equivalent on an alternative TOEFL exam)
    (or)
    IELTS score of at-least 6.5
     

 
PA's, NP's, RN's, LPN/LVN's, and Surg Tech's:

  • Must be a graduate of a formal surgical assistant training program approved by the ABSA
  • Must be able to document at-least 2 years clinical surgical work experience
  • Have a diploma, degree, or academic certificate from an accredited school, college, or university whose documented primary language of instruction is English
    (or)
    TOEFL iBT score of at-least 79 (or the equivalent on an alternative TOEFL exam)
    (or)
    IELTS score of at-least 6.5
